A land of adventure.Come with us to discover one of the most incredible and challenging countries for the western traveller.We’ll ride the rugged routes that connect&nbsp;Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s bustling modern capital, with&nbsp;Kharkhorin, the legendary seat of its past.After more than a decade of organising the Mongolia Bike Challenge and having travelled so many times, we feel confident that we can offer you the best of the best of this country we love so much.Throughout the journey, we’ll be accompanied by a&nbsp;support vehicle&nbsp;(yes, a real Russian UAZ van!) that will carry our luggage along with the food and water needed for each stage.Since the route between Mongolia’s current capital and its former capital crosses some remote stretches, we’ll spend half of the nights in authentic ger camps (with hot water, proper beds, and dinner served at the table) and the other half camping in our tents beneath an incredible blanket of stars.

The adventure begins in style, with an epic first stage in which we will cover 87 kilometres and 990 meters of accumulated altitude gain. We will enter the overwhelming Mongolian wilderness via a series of dirt tracks. As we leave the familiar civilisation behind and enter the nature, we start to get used to these immense landscapes. Our sight covers more and more distance.Tonight we will sleep in our first Ger Camp under an incredible blanket of stars.

Stage 01 — 87 km | 990 m

21 July

In the second stage of the trip we are already fully immersed in the Mongolian steppes. Today we cycle up and down continuously, gaining altitude until, at kilometre 58, we reach an altitude of 1,500 meters and begin a beautiful descent of almost 30 kilometres until we cross the Tynn River and reach our destination for the day: the second Ger Camp, which awaits us with all the comforts to help us regain our strength.

Stage 02 — 101 km | 910 m

22 July

Today we are facing a period of recovery. Now fully immersed in the Mongolian universe, it is quite possible that horses will greet us as we pass and that, if we look up into the sky, we will see huge eagles watching our progress.The sensation of immensity that Mongolia gives us today is intensified by the distance and the mixture of landscapes that each small peak we conquer and each valley we cross gives us.Today we will sleep in our tents, free camping, under the sea of stars.

Stage 03 — 65,5 km | 670 m

23 July

The fourth stage of our adventure through the Mongolian steppes takes us along tracks and paths that continue to lead us into the heart of the steppes.The landscape changes, as does the type of terrain: we start to find sandbanks and lake areas.At around kilometre 60 we reach Lake Tara and enter a curious and humid valley that leads us to the third Ger Camp of the trip, the one in front of the “Little Gobi”.

Stage 04 — 71,3 km | 440 m

24 July

The day starts in style: crossing the sand dunes of the “Little Gobi”. We may well have to put our feet on the ground and push the bike for a short distance. The effort will be rewarded by the incredible scenes we will pass through.We continue along roads and tracks until, at around kilometre 40, we reach a small village called Bürd, where we will stock up on provisions for the night (which we will spend free camping) and for tomorrow’s breakfast.

Stage 05 — 71,8 km | 650 m

25 July

Shortly after we start pedalling, we pass through the small village of Yesönüil, where we will stock up on provisions for the day and for the night, which we will spend again in free camping. Today we pass the Sangiin Dalai nuur lake and enter a slightly more mountainous area. We will be over 2000 metres and camp at 1900 metres above sea level.

Stage 06 — 73,3 km | 800 m

26 July

Our seventh stage takes us, on a gentle descent (where we will also have to face some ascent) to the meeting point of the great valley where the fourth Ger Camp awaits us, with open arms and a hot meal. Today we will notice how the landscape is changing and the seas of the steppes begin to be surrounded by mountains.

Stage 07 — 85,2 km | 670 m

27 July

Last stage of the journey. Today we will cover the 84 kilometres that separate us from Kharkhorin. It is an epic journey that takes us up rivers and valleys to a wooded peak from where we can see our goal, the ancient capital of Mongolia and once the centre of the known world.

Stage 08 — 83,8 km | 1200 m

28 July

Today we will enjoy a walk through this historic city, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.We will also be able to do some shopping and visit the monastery.

Welcome to&nbsp;Wakkanai, the northernmost city of Japan and the starting point of our incredible journey through&nbsp;Hokkaido!After a scenic&nbsp;internal flight from Tokyo Haneda Airport, we touch down at&nbsp;Wakkanai Airport, a small but charming gateway to this remote and picturesque region. As we step off the plane, we are immediately greeted by the&nbsp;fresh, crisp northern air&nbsp;and the sense of adventure ahead.Awaiting us at the airport is our&nbsp;private van, ready to transfer us comfortably to our&nbsp;first hotel. During the drive, we’ll get our&nbsp;first glimpses of Wakkanai, a town known for its&nbsp;rugged coastline, rich maritime culture, and stunning views of the Sea of Japan.Once we arrive and settle into our accommodations, it’s time to fully&nbsp;unwind and immerse ourselves in Japan’s renowned hospitality. Our evening begins with a visit to a&nbsp;relaxing onsen (hot spring), where we can&nbsp;soak away any travel fatigue&nbsp;and prepare our bodies for the adventure ahead. The warm, mineral-rich waters will help us fully&nbsp;decompress, setting the perfect tone for the days to come.After our rejuvenating onsen experience, we will enjoy our&nbsp;first group dinner, featuring a delicious&nbsp;Japanese-style meal&nbsp;with fresh, local ingredients—perhaps including some of&nbsp;Hokkaido’s famous seafood. Arrival in Wakkanai – The Beginning of Our Hokkaido Adventure

Enjoy a leisurely day in the northernmost town of Japan,&nbsp;Wakkanai, as we take time to assemble our bikes and prepare for the adventure ahead. Once our bicycles are ready, we’ll set off for&nbsp;Cape Noshappu, a stunning coastal point known for its panoramic views of the&nbsp;Sea of Japan&nbsp;and, on clear days, a glimpse of the distant&nbsp;Sakhalin Island. This ride will not only serve as a scenic introduction to the area but also as an opportunity to test our bikes and capture some memorable photos against the backdrop of the lighthouse and rugged coastline.After soaking in the views, we’ll cycle back into town to explore&nbsp;Wakkanai’s bustling fish market and harbor, where we can witness the daily activities of local fishermen and perhaps catch a glimpse of the region’s famed&nbsp;fresh seafood. From there, we’ll make a special visit to a&nbsp;local temple&nbsp;to receive a traditional&nbsp;blessing for our journey, adding a meaningful cultural touch to our adventure.As the day winds down, we’ll return to the hotel to enjoy a well-deserved&nbsp;dinner, reflecting on the day’s experiences and preparing for the journey ahead.

Free Day in Wakkanai: Bike Assembly, Scenic Ride, and Cultural Explora

The Journey Begins – Cycling to Kutcharo LakesideToday marks the&nbsp;official start&nbsp;of our incredible cycling adventure! After enjoying a&nbsp;hearty Japanese-style breakfast, we set off on our first day of riding, with the&nbsp;ocean as our constant companion on the left, offering breathtaking views as we pedal along the coastline.Our first major stop will be&nbsp;Cape Soya, the&nbsp;northernmost point of Japan, where we can take in the&nbsp;vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean&nbsp;stretching toward the horizon. This iconic location features a&nbsp;monument marking Japan’s northernmost tip, making for a perfect&nbsp;photo opportunity&nbsp;and a chance to pick up&nbsp;souvenirs&nbsp;to commemorate the beginning of our journey.Just a short ride from Cape Soya, we visit the&nbsp;Soya Peace Park, home to&nbsp;Japan’s famous wild deer. Here, we can take a moment to appreciate the peaceful surroundings, observe the deer grazing nearby, and reflect on the symbolic significance of this&nbsp;site dedicated to peace and remembrance.We then continue our journey southward, following the&nbsp;coastal road&nbsp;as it winds through the serene landscapes of northern Hokkaido. The route offers&nbsp;stunning sea views, fresh ocean air, and glimpses of the region’s quiet fishing villages.As we approach the village of&nbsp;Sarufutsu, we have two options for lunch, depending on our timing:•Option 1: A quick stop at a&nbsp;local supermarket, where we can grab something simple to eat on the go.•Option 2: A more leisurely stop at a&nbsp;local seafood restaurant&nbsp;at the&nbsp;77 km mark, where we can savor some of&nbsp;Hokkaido’s freshest seafood dishes, such as scallops and crab, which this region is famous for.After lunch, we tackle the final&nbsp;17 km stretch&nbsp;to our overnight destination:&nbsp;Kutcharo Lakeside Campsite. This&nbsp;beautiful lakeside campsite&nbsp;is nestled in a tranquil natural setting, offering a perfect place to relax after our first day on the road. With the peaceful waters of&nbsp;Lake Kutcharo&nbsp;nearby, we can unwind, enjoy the crisp evening air, and reflect on the first stage of our adventure.Tonight, we embrace the&nbsp;simplicity of outdoor life, enjoying a restful night under the stars, preparing ourselves for the exciting days ahead!
